When talking about systems engineering, we might get a little lost, and think of it as a very complicated, messy concept that is used in scientific areas and for very specific purposes (at least, that is what we thought). But, while scrolling down the internet results when looking for “SE” (Systems Engineering), we found it actually was a simple idea, that could indeed be applied in almost as many ways you can think of.
In today’s post, we want you to discover this new concept, and have a clear idea of what an incredible tool Systems Engineering is. Thanks to SEBoK, a sort of “free encyclopaedia” it has become easier than ever to use in just about every area of knowledge.
How it all Started…
There came a time, around 1950s, where relying on design evolution to improve a system and other similar existing tools were not sufficient to meet growing demands (in every industry-aspect). As a consequence, new methods that addressed the complex problem began to be developed. These were included in a new discipline called “systems engineering” (SE), whose technical definition is “the methodical, multi-disciplinary approach for the design, realization, technical management, operations, and retirement of successful systems that must satisfy the needs of their customers, users and other stakeholders”.
In other words, Systems Engineering is responsible for finding practical solutions to everyday life through mathematical knowledge and engineering sciences.
In turn, all the key knowledge related to this discipline is contained in the guide to the Systems Engineering Body of Knowledge (SEBoK). This resource is a kind of online encyclopaedia that provides users with more than one hundred introductory articles that reflect an overview of systems engineering.
